Waubonsee will host the grand opening of the Latinx Resource Center on March 24

Waubonee Community College in Sugar Grove will host “La Bienvenida,” the grand opening of the Latinx Resource Center at its downtown Aurora campus on Thursday, March 24, from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

The event is family friendly, free and open to the public.

LRC staff will be available to discuss the resources and support services offered by the centre. Attendees will be able to tour the center and hear Diana Iracheta, founder of Latina Engineer and Waubonee alumna, also a first-generation Mexican immigrant, speak about STEM, with a focus on empowering women and Latinas in engineering.

The event will also include other entertainment and light refreshments.

Programs offered by the LRC include Alliance Building Through Mentorship and Navigating Inclusive Student Opportunity (CAMINOS), a mentorship program designed to help students grow professionally, mentally, and academically.

In addition, the center offers free “Colegio de Empoderamiento” programming, which offers families and prospective students the opportunity to learn more about the student experience in higher education, with an emphasis on navigating through university, finding appropriate resources and solving problems.

Waubonee Community College is one of three colleges in Illinois and the only community college in the state to receive a Title V grant to strengthen and expand educational opportunities for Hispanic and low-income students.
