Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week: Bernie Truax
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif .– Cal Poly’s sophomore wrestler Bernie truax, who posted a 4-1 record en route to a third place finish at the Matmen Open last week, has been selected as Student Athlete of the Week at Mechanics Bank Cal Poly.
Truax got one technical drop and two decisions before pinning 19th Zach Braunagel of Illinois in the game that decided third and fourth in the 184-pound category. One of Truax’s decisions was a 6-1 nod to Braunagel in the second round.
Truax beat Lehigh’s Jack Wilt in a 16-0 technical drop in the first round and was a 3-1 winner over Oregon State’s No.16 Trey Munoz in wrestling. His only loss was a 7-3 decision to Mark Hall of the Penn Regional Training Center in the semifinals.
Truax, who placed second at the Michigan State Invitational in early November, is currently 6-1 for the season. He won the NCAA All-American honors last year with a fourth place at 174 pounds at the national championships held in St. Louis.
The Rancho Buena Vista High School graduate is career 51-22 – eight of his fall wins – as a Mustang. He was named Male Athlete of the Year by Cal Poly last June with baseball player Brooks Lee.
Antonio Lorenzo also finished third at the Matmen Open, competing at 125 pounds, while Brawley lamer was fifth at 157 pounds.
With Friday’s double out-of-conference meeting against northern Colorado postponed due to COVID-19 protocols, Cal Poly’s next meeting will be on January 21 against Arizona State at 7 p.m. at the Mott Athletics Center.
