Fundraising lunch organized for the benefit of a deputy shot dead in the line of duty

CRAVEN COUNTY, NC (WITN) – Plates were filled with food to raise funds for Craven County MP Zachary Bellingham.

“It’s very sincere, very humiliating. We are so lucky to have a county like the one we live in that supports law enforcement, that loves Deputy Bellingham and what he does, ”said Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes.

Bellingham was shot while serving enlistment papers and performing a welfare check at Robert Westrup’s home earlier this month.

Westrup has been charged with attempted first degree murder and assaulting a law enforcement officer with a firearm.

While Westrup is behind bars, Bellingham is recovering from serious injuries.

According to Hughes, Bellingham is in a drug rehab center in Atlanta. Through events like the Fundraising Lunch, community members raise money for her medical bills.

“Much is just the unknown [of] these unknown expenses. We don’t know what to expect, ”said Hughes.

Hughes explained that the donations are made through the non-profit Craven County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the barbecue event is just one of many.

“Since the incident the office has met and we have tried to organize various fundraisers and events to help MP Bellingham and his family,” said Evelyn Ochoa, Executive Assistant to the Craven County Sheriff.

The event came as Bellingham struggles to get back on his feet and hopefully get back to the office.

“My intentions and intentions and all the intentions of my people are that they come back and work with us.”
