ELLOREE, SC — For the first time in three years, the Elloree Trials are returning to Orangeburg County. This beloved horse race has been suspended due to COVID-19.

“It’s something that people appreciate. It’s outside and the phones are ringing non-stop,” said Elloree Training Center owner Frank “Goree” Smith.

This will be the 59th year of the event. It was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to restrictions on large gatherings. According to Smith, this year’s event will run as normal, with no restrictions.

He says more than 3,000 people from across the country are expected to come to Orangeburg County for the event. In some years, up to 5,000 people have attended.

More tourism means more people buying locally.

“If we could have a good day this year, we’ll be totally up to speed with them, especially with the interest and what we’re hearing from everyone,” Smith said.

Charlene Rainey owns Vintiq Boutique in Elloree. The store opened the year the trials were canceled.

“We’re excited to get it back. There’s going to be a lot of traffic on Highway 6, so hopefully it gets a lot of people on Cleveland Street,” Rainey said.

Elloree 2022 tryouts will take place on March 19 at the Elloree Training Center. Doors open at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 12 p.m. General admission is $20 and can be purchased at the door.
