LSU mechanical engineering professor designs ‘soft’ robot for NASA
Hunter Gilbert, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at LSU, is developing a “soft” carbon fiber robot for NASA.
With a grant from the Board of Regents and the Louisiana Space Consortium, Gilbert and his graduate and undergraduate students will spend a year building a soft robot in his lab. The first six months of the project will focus on modelling, simulation and design, while the last six months will focus on experimental evaluation.
“At the moment, we are still in the fundamental stages, so we are focusing on a small bench-scale in the laboratory,” Gilbert said. “Development of something that goes into space can come at a later date, once we have the basics. We need to understand it before trying to scale it.
Soft robots have their advantages besides being lightweight. The first is that bumping into objects will not destroy the robot or the environment it operates in since the robot is made of carbon fiber, which makes it bendable.
Soft robots are also being explored for surgical use, as well as industrial inspection and maintenance.
